Good News: Medi-Aid Supported - NL for SL Ditwah Cyclone Housing Project completed
We are pleased to share an important update on the NL for SL Ditwah Cyclone Housing Construction Project, which received significant financial support from Medi-Aid.
✅ Both houses have now been completed.* One house has already been handed over to a family severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah.
* The handover took place without a formal ceremony. Representatives of NL for SL and relevant government officials were present.
* The beneficiary family was selected jointly by government officials and the NL for SL Foundation (Stichting).
* The main selection criterion was the complete loss of the family home during the cyclone, while the family did not qualify for government housing compensation of approximately Rs. 5 million.
* The selected family consists of a disabled former soldier, his unemployed wife, and their five children, who had been left without a permanent home.
* Each house is built on a 10-perch plot of land, providing the family with both a home and a small garden.
* The house and land are transferred to the beneficiary family. However, the property cannot be sold or transferred to another party, ensuring that the assistance remains with the intended beneficiary family.
* Each house consists of a veranda, living room, two bedrooms, kitchen, and bathroom, providing a basic but complete family home. Both houses have running water, electricity and road access.
* Selection of the beneficiary family for the second house is currently underway.
* The construction cost of each house was approximately Rs. 4 million (around €11,000), which represents a very reasonable cost for providing a complete home and land to a disaster-affected family.
🙏 Appreciation to Medi-Aid
The significant financial contribution made by Medi-Aid has played an important role in making this housing project possible. This support has helped provide a safe and permanent home to a family that lost everything during Cyclone Ditwah.
We sincerely appreciate everyone who contributed to this important initiative and helped turn much-needed assistance into a lasting solution for families affected by the disaster.

🏠 NLforSL Hope to Home – Project Update 🏡
Dear friends,
On behalf of NLforSL, I’m  delighted to share that we have  officially commenced the “Hope to Home” housing project, through which we will build two houses for two families who lost their homes in the Ditwah disaster.
This initiative is being carried out in close coordination with the Divisional Secretariat of Udapalatha (Gampola Division) — one of the regions most severely affected by floods and landslides.
Yesterday, at an auspicious time, the foundation stone was laid by the Divisional Secretary and her team on our behalf, accompanied by the chanting of Pirith for blessings.
If all goes as planned, these will be among the very first homes completed for Ditwah-affected families. We are deeply grateful to all of you — especially our kind donors — whose generosity during the flood relief appeal has made this possible. 🙏 Because of your support, two marginalized families who lost everything but did not fit the criteria to qualify for the government’s Rs. 50-lakh grant will soon have new, safe homes in a NBRO approved land in one of the most scenic locations in Pussellawa.
As we aim to constructing two houses, our costs have slightly exceeded the original budget by  a few thousand euros. Any contributions, whether personal or through your organisations, will be of immense help in completing this effort.I shall share a few photos here and upload more updates soon on our website nlforsl.org and Facebook page. Please feel free to reach out if you’d like any further information about this project or how to contribute.Thank you, as always, for standing with us and helping turn hope into homes. ❤️🏠
