A new step towards empowerment for tea communities in Sri Lanka

With deep gratitude, Medi Aid is pleased to announce the start of a new pilot project designed to strengthen vulnerable tea communities in Sri Lanka. Thanks to the commitment, trust and generosity of our valued sponsors and the Medi Aid team, we are now able to begin an initiative that offers women and young adults practical opportunities for a more independent and dignified future.

The project focuses on setting up sewing workshops where participants can learn professional sewing skills, gain access to materials and machines, and receive guidance in developing products for local and external markets. These may include school uniforms, workwear, reusable bags and household textiles. This practical approach will help families strengthen their income and reduce dependence on insecure or low-paid work.

Beyond economic empowerment, Medi Aid also aims to support greater self-confidence, leadership and social participation among women within their families and communities. By training local participants and, in time, developing trainers from within the community, we are building a sustainable model that can be expanded to other tea communities in the future.

The funds are expected to be received on 11 September 2026. Medi Aid Sri Lanka is also preparing an opening ceremony, which is expected to take place next week. Once the date has been finalized, special invitations will be sent to the members of Medi Aid Sri Lanka.
